ANZAC Day Memorial Service

25 April is the national day of commemoration of Australia and New Zealand for victims of war and for recognition of the role of their armed forces. It marks the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War at Gallipoli in Turkey .

Churches participate in Anzac Day to honour the soldiers, sailors, and airmen who died in war, viewing it as a solemn act of remembrance and a chance to reflect on their sacrifice. Many also see it as an opportunity for prayer, seeking forgiveness and remembering the fallen before God.

On ANZAC Day I attended the service at the Royal Brighton Yacht Club and gave the blessing. Than you to Tim Renouf for the magnificent photo this morning.

Our ANZAC service will be on Sunday at 10am. Medals may be worn.

Vale Pope Francis

We extend our condolences to our Roman Catholic friends on the death of Pope Francis. He has been a beacon of humility and compassion from the moment he chose the name Francis, inspired by the saint known for his love of the poor and care for creation. Pope Francis was an extraordinary man, who was determined to keep at the very heart of his ministry his calling to be first and foremost a pastor rather than a figurehead. He continually urged his colleagues to focus on love rather than ideology, and to see and embrace the reality of the lives of those they were called to serve.

The world has lost a great Godly man. Please pray for all who knew and loved him. Let us give thanks to God for Pope Francis' extraordinary witness, moral courage and lifelong commitment to the Gospel.

May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

Changing of the Guard

Episcopal elections in Melbourne and worldwide

There is a changing of the guard not only for our own Anglican Diocese of Melbourne, but also in the Church of England who are looking to appoint a new Archbishop of Canterbury, and now in the Roman Catholic Church too.

In Melbourne, Synod members will meet to elect a new Archbishop, commencing on 23 May. Several days have been set aside for consideration of the candidates. Their 'names' will be formally announced on 16 May. For those interested in the process, you can download the Synod Election Newsletter 1 here and Newsletter 2 here.Good luck with the flow chart.

Hope in an uncertain world
Hope in an uncertain world

Hope25 is an initiative of the Anglican Church of Australia that seeks to empower Anglican parishes and communities in an intentional season of sharing hope in Jesus from Easter to Pentecost in 2025. During this period, we will be preaching on the hope (or rather the certainty) that we find in Jesus and ideas for you to be able to share your faith in that hope with others.

Clergy Conference

Xeverie and I will be away at a clergy conference for our Jumbunna Episcopate, to be held in Mooroolbark from next Sunday afternoon until Tuesday evening (4-6 May). With the churchwardens concurrence, we have been able to secure a 3 bedroom home nearby (through AirBnB) for less than the cost of the accommodation at the conference centre. We just have to get our own breakfasts! Pillow fights are on!

Easter Services

Confirmation and Reception into the Anglican Church

At Easter, in the 10am service, we celebrated the confirmation of Juliet and Sophia, and the formal reception of Wendy into the Anglican Church of Australia by +Paul Barker.

Good Friday

My last Vicar's News included photos from the Walk of Witness and reception afterwards. In the afternoon we held the solemn service with the Veneration of the Cross. Our three cock sculptures were on display as the reading from St John's gospel contains the story of St Peter's denial of Christ, with the cock crowing.

Tenebrae

The choir were spectacular in their singing for our evening Tenrbrae service. You can hear the service here, though the video is poor due to the darkness.

New fire, vigil and first Eucharist of Easter

On Saturday evening we had our first celebration of the resurrection through the light of the Paschal Candle and a vigil contemplating the first creation while we awaited the new creation brought about by Christ's resurrection.

Easter Day

We were blessed with a visit from our bishop, the Rt Rev'd Dr Paul Barker, as well as confirmation candidates, a full church at 10am, and in-house photographer Simon Cee, all for the celebration of the resurrection on Easter Day.
