The Annunciation

The announcement by the angel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary that she would conceive a son by the power of the Holy Spirit to be called Jesus is from the beginning of St Luke's Gospel (Luke 1:26–38). Mary was the first to hear and believe that God would do what he promised the world. Mary models faith for us. She shows us that faith is more than assent, but is also trust, commitment, obedience, and submission to God.

Xeverie is away on a silent retreat this weekend.

Lent Bible study

Our Lent studies continue on Sunday at 11.30am in the Parish Hall. Robert Timms will be leading the study today. I have three baptisms following the 10am service.

Confession

During the season of lent, we reflect on our faith, the bible and our relationship with God.

In all our services, we make a general confession and receive absolution together. Private confession, or "auricular confession," is a practice where an individual confesses their sins to a priest in a private setting, seeking counsel, direction, and absolution. All may come to private confession, none are required to, but some should. In this penitential season of Lent, the clergy are offering confession (and absolution where appropriate) by private appointment. Ring Ian on 0421 321 321 in first instance.

Confession as practiced within the modern Anglican Church as a rite in and of itself, is wholly biblical, and consistent with the views of the post-reformation church. It has been a practice of the church since ancient times and has biblical warrant.

Anglican Historical Society

On Thursday evening I had the pleasure of speaking to members of the Anglican Historial Society about the history of St Andrew's. It was a very enjoyable evening and they were very interested in hearing about our church, the second oldest in Melbourne.

The society was founded in 1955 to preserve and publicise the history of the Anglican Church of Australia, particularly in Victoria and Melbourne, and membership is open to all who are interested in the rich history of the Anglican Church in Melbourne. Lectures and occasional excursions are held and, at the final meeting of the year, the Annual Bishop James Grant Memorial Lecture is delivered.

The Society meets monthly from February-November (except July and August), at 6.30pm on the third Wednesday of the month, at Holy Trinity, East Melbourne. New members are welcome at any meeting. For further information, please contact the Secretary, Roger Meyer, on 9818 4950 or roger.meyer@bigpond.com to receive meeting notices.

Working Bee

For your diaries, we plan a working bee in the church grounds on 12 April 2025.
