Palm Sunday

Hippolyte Flandrin, Christ's Entry into Jerusalem, 1842-46
On Sunday at 10am we begin with the liturgy of the Palms at the wayside cross outside 230B New Street (at the rear of the church) and will process into the church from there. Palm Sunday commemorates the entrance of Christ into Jerusalem, during which palm branches were placed in his path, before his arrest on Holy Thursday and his crucifixion on Good Friday. This marks the beginning of our Holy Week reflections on the way of the Cross ending on Easter Day with the celebration of Christ's Resurrection.
Last Sunday - organ and brass quintet

An absolute stunning performance by Dr Calvin Bowman and a brass quintet organised by Corey East-Bryans for us at 10am. Click here to hear the postlude 'Maestoso' from Symphony No. 3 by Camille Saint Sans, arranged for organ and brass by Craig Garer. This will open in a new window.

Working Bee
On Saturday we are having a working bee around the church and facilities to get them in best appearance for Holy Week and Easter. Any time you can spend between 9-12noon will assist for the churchwardens and Parish Council members.

Holy Week and Easter Services

Stations of the Cross in art

On Holy Tuesday evening (15 April) we are having a contemplative look at the stations of the Cross as represented by various artists. This year we are commencing at 6.45pm so as to ensure that 'The Fish Tank' who supply our fish and chips dinner which follows our service have enough preparation time. The meal is $15 at the door.
Maundy Thursday

Our service on Maundy Thursday commences at 7pm
Maundy Thursday is celebrated the Thursday before Easter in remembrance of the Last Supper, when Jesus introduced holy communion and washed the disciples' feet. “After that, Jesus poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him” (John 13:5). At St Andrew's, we wash one another's hands.
This marks the beginning of the ‘Triduum’- the three great days of the Christian year. - Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Day. These are seen as one worship service continuing over three feast days.
After communion, the sacrament is reserved for ante-communion on Good Friday and taken to the 'chapel of repose' symbolising Jesus vigil in the Garden of Gethsemane prior to his arrest and crucifixion on that first Good Friday.

GOOD FRIDAY

The second day of the Triduum commences in conjunction with all the other Christian Churches in Brighton for the "Walk of Witness' which commences on our front Steps and finishes in the Garden of Remembrance, followed by refreshments, including hot cross buns, in the Western Courtyard.

At 2pm we have our service of solemn prayers, Veneration of the Cross and ante-communion. Ante-communion means there is no consecration of the sacramental bread and wine in the service - on this day of remebrance of Christ's death, we use the consecrated hosts which we set aside the evening prior, Maundy Thursday, in the Lady Chapel.

Our evening service is Tentbrae at 7pm. Tenebrae means 'darkness' in Latin and is designed to serve as a powerful, reflective experience for the faithful during of the Easter Triduum. The representation of the darkness of sin and death serve to call the faithful to embrace the light of Christ, who has conquered death.
